Character Counter
Count characters in your text with or without spaces using this free character counter. Also shows line counts for documents, code and messages.
About this tool
Character limits are everywhere: tweet-length posts, meta descriptions, SMS segments, form fields and programming constraints. One character too many and your message gets cut off or rejected. Eyeballing the length is not a strategy.
Our free character counter gives you the exact count instantly, both with and without spaces, plus the number of lines. Paste your text, press the button, and you know exactly where you stand.
How to use
Paste or type your text into the box and press Count Characters. The tool shows three numbers: total characters including spaces, characters with all whitespace removed, and line count.
Edit your text and recount as often as you like. Nothing is uploaded; the counting happens entirely in your browser.
The math behind it
Counting is literal: every letter, digit, punctuation mark and space is one character. The without-spaces count removes all whitespace characters first, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Lines are counted by splitting on line breaks, so a single paragraph with no breaks is one line.
