Volume Calculator

Free volume calculator for 3D shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, and box. Enter dimensions and get the volume instantly with the formula shown.

About this tool

Volume tells you how much space a three-dimensional object takes up - or how much it can hold. From the concrete for a patio to the water in a fish tank to the soil for a garden bed, volume math comes up constantly in real life.

Pick your shape, enter its dimensions, and this volume calculator gives you the answer instantly, with the formula shown so you can check the work.

How to use

Choose a shape: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, or box. Only fill in the dimensions your shape needs - for example, a sphere needs just the radius, while a box needs length, width, and height.

Press Calculate Volume. The result appears immediately in cubic units matching whatever units you measured in.

The math behind it

Each shape has its own formula: cube = side^3; sphere = 4/3 x pi x r^3; cylinder = pi x r^2 x h; cone = (pi x r^2 x h) / 3; box = length x width x height.

Keep all dimensions in the same units - mixing centimeters and meters is the most common mistake.

Frequently asked questions

What units does the answer come in?
Cubic units of whatever you measured with: centimeters give cubic centimeters, meters give cubic meters, inches give cubic inches. One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters, which is handy for tanks and pools.
What is the difference between volume and surface area?
Volume measures the space inside an object (cubic units), while surface area measures the outside skin (square units). A box's volume tells you how much it holds; its surface area tells you how much paint you need.
How do I find the volume of an irregular shape?
For odd shapes, the water displacement method works: submerge the object in a measured container and note how much the water level rises. That rise equals the object's volume - the same principle Archimedes famously discovered.
