Surface Area Calculator

Free surface area calculator for 3D shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone and box. Enter the dimensions and get the exact surface area instantly.

About this tool

Surface area is the total area of all faces of a 3D object - the paint needed for a box, the wrapping paper for a ball, the material for a cylindrical tank.

Select the shape, enter its dimensions, and this surface area calculator returns the exact figure instantly.

How to use

Choose cube, sphere, cylinder, cone or box, then fill in only the matching fields. A sphere needs just the radius; a box needs length, width and depth.

Press Calculate Surface Area and the answer appears in square units of your measurements.

The math behind it

Cube: 6 x side^2. Sphere: 4 x pi x r^2. Cylinder: 2 x pi x r x (h + r). Cone: pi x r x (r + slant height). Box: 2 x (lw + lh + wh).

Surface area is always in square units - square centimetres, square inches, square feet - matching whatever unit you measured in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between surface area and volume?
Surface area measures the outside skin of an object (in square units) - how much paint or wrapping it needs. Volume measures the space inside it (in cubic units) - how much it can hold. A balloon needs surface area for the rubber, volume for the air.
How do I find the surface area of a cylinder?
A cylinder has two circular ends plus the curved side. The formula is 2 x pi x r x (height + radius). Enter the radius and height above and the calculator does it for you, including both ends.
What units should I use?
Any unit works as long as you are consistent - enter everything in centimetres and the answer is in square centimetres. Mixing units (radius in cm, height in metres) will give a wrong answer, so convert first.
