Tip Calculator

Free tip calculator: enter your bill, pick a tip percentage, and split it between friends. See the tip amount, total bill, and each person's share instantly.

About this tool

Splitting a restaurant bill should be the easy part of a nice evening, but mental math after dessert is nobody's idea of fun. Add different tip expectations and a group of friends, and it gets messy fast.

Our tip calculator ends the debate. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are splitting, and everyone instantly sees what they owe - tip, total, and per-person share.

How to use

Type the bill amount, then choose a tip from the preset buttons: 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25 percent. If you want something else, type it into the custom tip box - it overrides the preset.

Enter the number of people splitting the bill (leave it at 1 if it is just you), then press Calculate Tip. The tool shows the tip amount, the grand total, and each person's share.

The math behind it

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip. Each person's share is the total divided by the number of people.

For example, a $120 bill with a 20% tip split 3 ways: tip = $24, total = $144, each pays $48.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15-20% is standard for good service, with 20% or more for excellent service. Customs vary by country - in some places a service charge is already included, and in others tipping is uncommon. When in doubt, 18% is a safe middle ground.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. The difference is small - on a $100 bill with 8% tax, 20% pre-tax is $20.00 versus $21.60 post-tax.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different things?
The fairest way is for each person to total their own items, add their share of tax, and apply the tip percentage to their own subtotal. For a quick even split, this calculator divides the whole bill equally - perfect when everyone ordered roughly the same.
