Sales Tax Calculator

Calculate sales tax fast with our free sales tax calculator. Enter the price and tax rate to see the tax amount and the total price you will actually pay.

About this tool

The price on the tag is rarely the price at the register. Our free sales tax calculator tells you exactly how much tax gets added and what you will actually pay, in one click.

Enter the pre-tax price and your local tax rate. The tool instantly shows the tax amount and the final total - no mental math at the checkout line.

How to use

Type the item's price before tax, then enter the sales tax rate as a percentage. In the US, combined state and local rates typically range from 0 to about 10 percent - check a receipt from a local store if you are unsure.

Press Calculate Tax to see the tax amount and the total price. Handy for budgeting big purchases like electronics or furniture.

The math behind it

The math is simple: Tax = Price x Rate / 100, and Total = Price + Tax. A $100 item at 8 percent tax adds $8, for a total of $108.

Some places layer multiple taxes (state plus county plus city). If yours does, just add the rates together first and enter the combined percentage - the result is the same.

Frequently asked questions

What sales tax rate should I use?
It depends on where you live and shop. US states set a base rate, and many counties and cities add their own on top, so the real rate at the register is the combined total. Look at any recent store receipt from your area - it usually breaks down the rate. Rates change occasionally, so verify with your state's revenue department for big purchases.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
They are cousins, not twins. US sales tax is added at the final sale to the consumer, so shelf prices exclude it. VAT (value-added tax), used in Europe and many other regions, is baked into the displayed price - what you see is what you pay. This calculator models the US-style added-at-checkout tax. If your prices already include VAT, you do not need it.
Are groceries and clothes taxed?
It varies widely. Many US states exempt groceries or tax them at a reduced rate, and a handful exempt clothing under a price threshold. Digital goods, restaurant meals, and services each have their own rules. When in doubt, check your state tax authority's list of taxable items - the calculator handles the math, but you supply the correct rate.
