Discount Calculator

Free discount calculator: enter the original price and discount percent to get the sale price and exactly how much money you save on every purchase.

About this tool

Sale signs are designed to make you feel like you are winning, but '25% off' is meaningless until you see the final price. A discount calculator does the mental math for you: the exact amount knocked off and the price you will actually pay.

It is also the fastest way to compare deals. Is 30% off $120 better than $40 off $150? Your brain guesses; the calculator knows. Shoppers who check the real numbers consistently spend less for the same basket.

How to use

Type in the original (pre-sale) price and the discount percentage from the tag or listing, then press Calculate Discount.

You instantly see the discount amount in dollars, the final sale price, and your total savings. Use it in-store before you reach the register, or stack two offers - for example 20% off plus an extra 10% - by running the sale price through the tool a second time.

The math behind it

Discount amount = original price x (discount percent / 100). Sale price = original price - discount amount. Note that stacked discounts multiply, they do not add: 20% then 10% off $100 is $72, not $70, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced $80.

Sales tax, where applicable, is charged on the discounted price in most places - another small win the sticker never mentions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off quickly in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left ($80 -> $8), then double it ($16 off, so $64). For 15%, take 10% plus half of that. Or just use this calculator - it is faster and exact.
Do stacked discounts add up?
No. A 20% discount followed by 10% off is not 30% off: the second applies to the reduced price. $100 becomes $80, then $72. Run the result through the calculator twice to see the true final price.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
In most US states and many other countries, sales tax applies to the discounted price, which saves you a little extra. A few places tax the original price - check your local rules if the register total surprises you.
