GPA Calculator

Calculate your GPA instantly with our free GPA calculator. Enter up to 5 courses with grades and credit hours to get your accurate grade point average now.

About this tool

Your GPA (grade point average) summarizes your academic performance in a single number that colleges and employers understand. Our free GPA calculator handles the weighted math for up to 5 courses in seconds.

Select each course grade and enter its credit hours. Courses with more credits count more toward your GPA, exactly like your school calculates it.

How to use

For each course, pick the letter grade from the dropdown and type the number of credit hours. If you are calculating fewer than 5 courses, just leave the extra credit fields at 0 - they will be ignored.

Press Calculate GPA to see your total credits and your GPA on the standard 4.0 scale. Use it to check what grades you need this semester to reach a target GPA.

The math behind it

Each letter grade converts to points: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Multiply each grade's points by its credit hours, add those products together, then divide by the total credit hours.

For example, an A in a 4-credit course (16 points) plus a B in a 3-credit course (9 points) gives 25 points over 7 credits, or a 3.57 GPA. Heavier courses pull the average more.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA?
On the 4.0 scale, 3.0 is a B average and is considered solid. A 3.5 or higher is generally strong and competitive for scholarships and graduate programs, while 3.7+ is excellent. That said, context matters: some programs and employers care more about your major GPA or recent improvement than the overall number. Always check the specific requirements of what you are applying for.
Does this calculator use weighted or unweighted GPA?
This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A is always 4 points regardless of course difficulty. Some high schools use weighted GPAs that give extra points for honors or AP classes, which can push the scale to 5.0. If your school weights advanced courses, this tool will slightly understate your official GPA - check your school's policy.
How can I raise my GPA quickly?
Focus extra effort on high-credit courses, since they move the average most. Retaking a course you failed can replace a zero with a much higher grade at many schools. Also remember that early semesters carry the same weight as later ones in a cumulative GPA, so one bad semester becomes a smaller fraction of the total as you complete more credits. Consistent B+ work beats occasional A's mixed with C's.
