GST / VAT Calculator

Calculate GST or VAT in seconds. Add tax to a net price or strip it out of a gross price at any rate — built for Pakistan, India and 160+ tax systems, free.

About this tool

GST and VAT are the taxes hiding inside almost every price tag — added to net prices at checkout, or already baked into the sticker price. Shopkeepers, freelancers and small businesses constantly need to move in both directions: add the tax on, or strip it back out.

This calculator does both at any rate you set. It is built with Pakistan and India in mind, where GST rates like 18% (and India’s 5/12/18/28 slabs) are part of daily business, but it works for any VAT or sales-tax system on earth.

How to use

Enter the amount, the tax rate as a percentage, and choose your direction: Add tax turns a net price into the gross price a customer pays; Remove tax pulls the tax back out of a gross price to reveal the net. Press Calculate Tax for the full three-line breakdown.

Common rates are pre-typed as examples — just overwrite the rate box with whatever applies to your product.

The math behind it

Adding tax: Gross = Net × (1 + r), where r is the rate as a decimal. Removing tax reverses it: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + r). The tax itself is always the difference between the two.

Example at 18%: adding to 1,000 gives tax 180 and total 1,180. Removing from 1,180 gives a net price of 1,000 and tax of 180 — the round trip is exact.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GST and VAT?
Almost nothing, from the calculator’s point of view. VAT (value-added tax) is charged at each production stage with credits for tax already paid; GST — as used in Pakistan and India — is a unified version of the same idea. Both are consumption taxes added as a percentage of the price.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Divide the tax-inclusive price by one plus the rate: at 18%, divide by 1.18. So a 1,180 price tag holds 1,000 of product and 180 of tax. Choose Remove tax in the calculator and it does the division for you.
What GST rate applies in Pakistan and India?
Pakistan’s standard general sales tax rate is 18%. India uses slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% depending on the goods or service. Rates do change, so always confirm the current rate for your specific item before invoicing.
Is GST charged on the discounted price?
Yes — tax applies to the final selling price after discounts, not the original sticker price. If a 2,000 item is discounted to 1,500, the 18% tax is calculated on 1,500.
What do tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices mean?
Tax-inclusive means the tax is already inside the shown price (typical shop shelf tags); tax-exclusive means it gets added at checkout (typical B2B quotes). Use Remove tax for the first case and Add tax for the second.
